Peter Coughlan

Peter has amassed more than twenty years’ experience working with organizations of all shapes and sizes to innovate, transform, and renew themselves. He is now using that experience to address what he sees as the world’s most urgent challenge – to accelerate the shift from an extractive to a regenerative economy.

Prior to Exile, Peter was a senior partner at IDEO, a global design and innovation firm, where he developed and led the Transformation by Design practice in order to guide hundreds of Fortune 500 companies, governmental agencies, not-for-profits, foundations, educational institutions, and communities through a human-centered change process based in design principles and processes. Before IDEO, he conducted design research for Doblin Group in Chicago and Nissan Design International in San Diego.

In addition to his work with organizations, Peter has taught at the intersection of design, leadership, and transformation with Pinchot University (now part of Presidio University), with Aarhus University’s / Copenhagen Business School’s Leadership and Innovation in Complex Systems program, with California College of the Arts, and with Stanford Continuing Studies. He is also an affiliate with the Institute for the Future. He has a B.A. in English Literature from Trinity College, a Master’s in Education from Boston University, and a Ph.D in Applied Linguistics from UCLA.

Peter resides in the heart of Silicon Valley. When he’s not scheming about solutions to our urgent challenges, he is a student of personal development. He expresses his creativity through cooking, writing fiction, and photography.
